About Flinty Fell

Rising above the historic lead-mining village of Nenthead, this high North Pennine moorland offers a quiet alternative to the busier Cumbrian fells. Its broad, heather-clad summit is marked by a trig pillar, providing an expansive vantage point over the upper South Tyne valley and the distant, higher peaks of the Cross Fell range.

Did You Know?

  • The name likely derives from the Old English 'flent', referring to the hard, stony ground found across this high plateau. The fell's geology is defined by the limestone and sandstone of the Alston Block, which historically supported a thriving lead mining industry.
  • At its southern foot lies the Nenthead Mines complex; the fell's lower slopes are still marked by 'hushing' scars and old spoil heaps from centuries of lead and zinc extraction.
  • Standing at 614.6 metres, it is one of the most accessible peaks over 2,000 feet in the North Pennines. Walkers starting from the high road pass on the A689 near Nenthead can reach the summit with remarkably little vertical ascent compared to other Nuttalls.
  • From the summit trig pillar, the view west is dominated by the massive bulk of the Cross Fell range and the distinctive 'white golf ball' radar station on Great Dun Fell, while to the north, the landscape rolls toward the South Tyne Valley.
  • Despite the name suggesting a firm, rocky ascent, a walker is far more likely to find their boots sinking into deep, sodden peat than striking hard flint on the way to the top.
