About Eldon Hill

Rising above the limestone plateaus south of Castleton, this Tump is a study in contrasts. While its northern flank was heavily scarred by industrial-scale quarrying, the grassy summit retains an ancient feel. It offers an easy, rewarding ascent with clear views across to the Great Ridge and the Hope Valley.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the 13th-century 'Elvedon', meaning 'Elves’ Hill', suggesting the high limestone dome held a mystical reputation long before it became a site of heavy industry.
  • A significant Bronze Age tumulus sits near the summit. Excavations of this 1.5-metre-high burial mound have uncovered human remains and jewellery, marking the hill as a site of ritual importance for thousands of years.
  • Located 350 metres south of the summit, Eldon Hole is a 55-metre-deep chasm. In 1636, the philosopher Thomas Hobbes named it one of the 'Seven Wonders of the Peak', though local folklore preferred the more ominous theory that it was a direct entrance to the abyss.
  • From the summit, the view north is dominated by the 'shivering mountain' of Mam Tor and the Great Ridge, while looking south provides a clear perspective over the town of Buxton and the profile of Axe Edge Moor.
  • Despite its battered appearance, Eldon Hill is the highest limestone peak north of the River Wye. Its northern face is famously missing, having been excavated for road stone until the quarry finally closed in 1999.
  • Given the enormous bite taken out of its northern flank by the quarry, Eldon Hill is perhaps the only summit in the Peak District where you can enjoy a scenic view and a geological autopsy at the same time.
