About Creagan nan Gabhar

Not to be confused with its loftier namesake in the Cairngorms, this Graham stands guard over the eastern approach to Lochearnhead. It offers a surprisingly rugged ascent for its modest stature and provides front-row seats to the dramatic spectacle of Ben Vorlich across the water.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Gaelic as the 'Little Crag of the Goats,' though you are far more likely to encounter stubborn sheep than nimble caprines these days. The slopes were historically part of the volatile clan territories of the MacGregors and MacLarens.
  • Geologically, the hill is composed primarily of Dalradian metamorphic rocks, specifically mica-schist and grit. This contributes to the rather crumbly, 'steppy' feel of the terrain as you navigate the southern ridges rising from the Strathyre side.
  • While many hikers rush past on the A84 toward the bigger Munros, this peak serves as an excellent vantage point for surveying the entire length of Loch Earn. On a clear day, the views extend beautifully toward the distant Lawers range and the Trossachs' rolling greenery.
  • The summit area features a modest cairn marking the highest point of what is actually a broad and undulating ridge system. It is officially classified as a Graham, the category for Scottish hills between 2,000 and 2,500 feet that walkers tackle when they crave solitude.
  • Navigating the lower slopes in summer is a masterclass in 'heather-hopping' and dodging the hidden, swampy pockets that lie in wait for the unwary hiker. If you manage to reach the top without soaking your boots, you’ve either cheated or found a secret path the rest of us are still looking for.
