About Creag an Dail Bheag

Sitting just north of Braemar, this Corbett offers a fine perspective on the grand architecture of the eastern Cairngorms. Often paired with its neighbour Carn Liath, its heathery slopes provide a quieter alternative to the busy Munros, looking directly into the vast corries and granite cliffs of Beinn a' Bhuird.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Scottish Gaelic as 'Rock of the Little Meadow', describing the relationship between the hill’s craggy upper slopes and the grazing land in the glen at its foot.
  • The summit provides an exceptional viewpoint for studying the great eastern corries of Beinn a' Bhuird, particularly the dramatic, jagged profile of Coire na Ciche.
  • The approach through Gleann an t-Slugain passes the ruins of the 'Secret Lodge', an eccentric 19th-century hunting box built by a former estate owner to be as inconspicuous as possible.
  • Walkers often combine this summit with the nearby Carn Liath to create a logical high-level circuit that looks out over the Invercauld Estate and the winding River Dee.
  • Despite its status as a Corbett, it is frequently treated by Munro-baggers as a mere vantage point for scouting the snow conditions on the higher plateaus to the north.
