About Carn nam Fiaclan

Standing as a high, rugged sentinel on the western edge of the Maoile Lunndaidh plateau, this Munro Top offers a more dramatic character than its parent peak. Its northern face drops steeply into the glacial amphitheatre of Fuar-tholl Mòr, providing a sharp contrast to the rounded, mossy slopes found elsewhere in this remote range.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic 'Càrn nam Fiaclan,' meaning 'Cairn of the Teeth.' This describes the jagged, shattered rock features found along the rim of the northern corrie, which stand out against the otherwise smooth, weathered lines of the mountain.
  • The summit provides an outstanding vantage point for looking across the deep glens of the Coulin Forest toward the Torridon giants, with the distinctive white quartzite screes of Beinn Liath Mhòr and Sgùrr Ruadh particularly prominent to the west.
  • It overlooks the impressive glacial bowl of Fuar-tholl Mòr, a massive north-facing corrie where snow often lingers well into the summer months long after the surrounding plateau has cleared.
  • Reaching this point usually involves a formidable approach from Achnasheen that includes crossing the River Meig; in wet weather, this crossing can turn a long day into an impossible one, requiring a very long detour to find a safe bridge.
  • Despite the name, you won't find much to bite into up here; the 'teeth' are strictly geological, and the only thing likely to be sharp is the wind whipping across the exposed plateau.
