Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic Càrn na Crè, meaning ‘Cairn of the Clay’. This likely refers to deposits of heavy glacial soil or till found within the hollows of its otherwise rocky, gneiss-ribbed slopes.
  • The summit serves as an exceptional balcony for viewing the 'Great Wilderness' to the east, specifically the remote Munros of A' Mhaighdean and Ruadh Stac Mòr as they rise above the waters of Fionn Loch.
  • Situated within the Letterewe Estate, the hill is part of a landscape featuring some of the oldest rocks in Britain, with the local Lewisian gneiss dating back roughly three billion years.
  • Because there are no established paths to the top, the hill offers a much quieter experience than the nearby Munros, though the complex, undulating terrain makes for a surprisingly physical ascent.
  • The lack of distinct landmarks on the approach means that in poor visibility, the hill's 'Hump' status is well-earned; the broad, featureless slopes can easily lead a navigator in circles without a steady eye on the compass.
