About Carn Ghriogair North Top

Sitting on the eastern fringe of the Monadhliath, this remote Grampian top offers a quintessential experience of high, rolling Scottish moorland. Reaching the summit requires a journey through the expansive Dunmaglass estate, where the silent turbines of the wind farm contrast with the wild, undulating peat hags and heathery ridges.

Did You Know?

  • The name Carn Ghriogair translates from Scottish Gaelic as 'MacGregor’s Cairn.' Unlike many peaks named for their physical appearance, this refers to a personal name, likely a hunter or clansman from the MacGregor family who once frequented these high hunting grounds.
  • The hill is classified as a Tump, meaning it has a drop of at least 30 metres on all sides. It is almost always climbed in tandem with its slightly higher neighbour to the south, the main summit of Carn Ghriogair.
  • The surrounding landscape is heavily defined by the Dunmaglass Wind Farm; while controversial, the service tracks significantly ease the approach through what was once a notoriously trackless and boggy section of the Monadhliath range.
  • From the summit, walkers can look east across the deep trench of the River Findhorn to see the vast, rounded profiles of the Cairngorm giants, including the distinctive high plateau of Braeriach.
