About Carn Cas nan Gabhar

Rising above the head of Loch Broom near Braemore, this rugged North West Highland hill offers a quiet alternative to its famous Munro neighbours. Characterised by steep, heathery slopes and weathered rocky outcrops, the summit provides a dramatic, front-row perspective of An Teallach’s jagged spires across the deep trench of Strath More.

Did You Know?

  • The Gaelic name Càrn Cas nan Gabhar translates as the 'Steep Cairn of the Goats', a reference to the feral or domestic goats that historically grazed these rocky, high-altitude fringes.
  • The summit serves as an excellent vantage point for studying the sprawling Fannichs to the south, specifically the steep northern corries of Meall a' Chrasgaidh and Sgùrr nan Clach Geala.
  • Despite its modest height of 605 metres, the hill provides one of the best perspectives on the 'Big Grey Head' of Beinn Dearg and the remote wilderness of the Inverlael Forest.
  • A typical approach starts near the A835 road at Braemore, following the Allt na h-Iùbhraich to reach a ridge that feels far more remote and mountainous than its proximity to the tarmac suggests.
  • The hill’s status as a 'Tump'—a hill with a thirty-metre drop on all sides—is technically accurate, though the calf-burning heather on the ascent makes that thirty-metre distinction feel like a modest understatement.
