About Carn an Tionail

Situated in the deep wilderness between Loch Monar and Loch Mullardoch, this remote Graham offers a sense of isolation few hills can match. While often bypassed for the nearby Munros of Lurg Mhòr and Bidein a’ Choire Sheasgaich, its broad, heathery slopes provide an uncrowded vantage point over the rugged Monar Forest.

Did You Know?

  • Its name translates from Scottish Gaelic as the 'Cairn of the Gathering,' likely referring to its historical use as a meeting point where shepherds or hunters would congregate to collect livestock from the surrounding moors.
  • Reaching the summit requires significant effort, as it is buried deep within the Monar Forest; most walkers face a very long trek from Attadale or a boat crossing over Loch Monar to access it.
  • The summit offers an exceptional perspective on the northern faces of Lurg Mhòr and the distinctive, steep-sided peak of Bidein a’ Choire Sheasgaich, known to many hillwalkers as 'The Cheesebox.'
  • Given its name translates to the 'Hill of the Gathering,' the irony of its extreme isolation is rarely lost on those who have walked fifteen miles into the wilderness only to find themselves entirely alone.
  • The hill is classified as a Marilyn, meaning it has at least 150 metres of prominence, which ensures it stands as a distinct island of high ground despite being surrounded by much higher Munros.
