About Carn a' Gheoidh

Standing back from the mechanical clutter of the Glenshee ski development, this broad-backed Munro offers a genuine sense of solitude. While neighbours like The Cairnwell are dominated by chairlifts, this heathery plateau provides a wilder escape, with a summit cairn overlooking the remote lochans and deep corries of the Mounth.

Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic for 'Cairn of the Goose'. It is thought to refer to wild geese, such as the Greylag or Pink-footed goose, which use the high-altitude lochans in the area as resting points during their seasonal migrations.
  • Despite its 976-metre height, it is often considered one of the easiest Munros to summit. Starting from the Glenshee ski centre car park at 670 metres, walkers have already completed more than two-thirds of the total ascent before they even leave their vehicles.
  • The summit offers a stark contrast in views; look east to see the busy infrastructure of the ski resort, then turn west for a vast, empty panorama across the upper reaches of Glen Ey toward the distant, rugged peaks of the Beinn a' Ghlò massif.
  • It sits on the historic border between the traditional counties of Perthshire and Aberdeenshire, a division that remains today as the boundary between the Perth and Kinross and Aberdeenshire council areas.
  • It serves as the quietest member of the 'Glenshee Three'; while Càrn Aosda and The Cairnwell are scarred by ski tows and access tracks, this hill remains largely untouched by development, preserving its wild character.
  • While its neighbours are busy hosting chairlifts and cafe-goers, Carn a' Gheoidh sits quietly a few kilometres away, acting as the group's introvert and pretending the 20th century never happened.
