About Carn a' Choire Bhoidheach

Tucked away on the sprawling White Mounth plateau, this high Munro is often a quiet interlude between the more dramatic Lochnagar and Cairn Bannoch. While the summit itself is a broad, stony dome, the northern rim offers spectacular, dizzying views down the granite precipices of the namesake "Beautiful Corrie."

Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic for "Cairn of the Beautiful Corrie," referring to the dramatic, north-facing Coire Bhoidheach. This corrie is a stark contrast to the hill's otherwise rounded profile, featuring steep granite cliffs that plunge toward the Feindallacher Burn.
  • This Munro is a central pillar of the famous "White Mounth" circuit, a demanding outing from Glen Muick that typically includes Lochnagar, Cairn Bannoch, Broad Cairn, and Carn an t-Sagairt Mor.
  • Navigation on the summit plateau can be notoriously difficult in poor visibility; the terrain is so vast and uniform that walkers often require strict compass bearings to avoid drifting toward the steep drops of the Stuic or the wrong drainage basin.
  • From the northern edge of the plateau, there is a clear, commanding view across the deep trough of Glen Callater towards the distant, massive silhouettes of Beinn a' Bhuird and Ben Avon.
  • Despite standing at 1,110 metres—higher than any mountain in England or Wales—it is frequently relegated to the status of a 'bagging' afterthought by those distracted by the more iconic cliffs of its immediate neighbour, Lochnagar.
