About Caisteal Abhail

Often identified as the head of the ‘Sleeping Warrior’ silhouette from the mainland, this rugged Corbett is the northern bastion of Arran’s granite peaks. Its sprawling summit plateau is capped by chaotic rock tors, offering an airy vantage point over the jagged ridge of Cìr Mhòr and the deep trough of Glen Sannox.

Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic, with Caisteal meaning castle and Abhail usually translated as orchard. While 'Castle of the Orchard' sounds unlikely for a granite peak, it may refer to the sheltered, green hanging valleys nearby, or be a corruption of a word for ptarmigan.
  • Seen from the Ayrshire coast or the Kintyre peninsula, the mountain forms the prominent head and chest of the 'Sleeping Warrior,' a famous profile created by the undulating skyline of the North Arran hills.
  • To the east lies the formidable Ceum na Caillich, or the Witch’s Step. This is a dramatic, deep-cut notch in the ridge that requires a committed scramble to negotiate; those looking to avoid the exposure must endure a steep, eroding bypass path.
  • The summit provides a spectacular view of the A' Chìr ridge and the pyramid of Cìr Mhòr, often considered the finest mountain architecture in the Southern Hebrides. On clear days, the view extends across the Kilbrannan Sound to the Paps of Jura.
  • The summit is a complex arrangement of granite tors rather than a single peak. In heavy mist, the true high point can be difficult to distinguish, leading many walkers to methodically touch every major boulder on the plateau just to be safe.
