Did You Know?

  • The name Bryn Amlwg translates from Welsh as "prominent hill" or "conspicuous hill," a title earned by its commanding position over the surrounding lower-lying moorland.
  • Just to the south-east are the earthwork remains of Bryn Amlwg Castle, a medieval motte-and-bailey fortification that once guarded the strategic passes between the Teme and Clun valleys.
  • The summit sits directly on the border between Wales and England; you can stand with one boot in Powys and the other in Shropshire, which is about as close to an international border crossing as most hillwalkers will ever need.
  • On a clear day, the summit provides an unobstructed vantage point for identifying the distant, rugged peaks of the Berwyn Mountains to the north-west and the smooth, elevated plateau of the Long Mynd to the east.
