About Bram Rigg Top

Part of the high, grassy ridge between Calders and The Calf, this summit embodies the smooth, rounded character of the Howgill Fells. While the top itself is a broad plateau, the western edge drops steeply into the deep cleft of Bram Rigg Beck, offering a dramatic contrast to the easy-going ridge path.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Old Norse 'brame', meaning bramble or briar, and 'hryggr', meaning a ridge or spine of land. This refers to the long, steep-sided spur that falls away to the west towards the Rawthey valley.
  • From the summit, the view west across the Lune Valley is particularly impressive, looking over the M6 motorway to the Far Eastern Fells of the Lake District, where the distinctive pyramidal peak of Ill Bell stands out on the skyline.
  • It is most commonly visited as part of the 'high-level' traverse between Sedbergh and The Calf. The walking here is famous for its short-cropped turf, which Alfred Wainwright described as having the feel of a velvet carpet, making it some of the most comfortable underfoot terrain in the country.
  • Unlike the rocky crags of the nearby Lake District or the limestone pavements of the Southern Dales, the terrain here is defined by smooth, steep-sided 'flutings'—deeply eroded gullies caused by water runoff on the soft Silurian rock.
  • In heavy mist, the summit’s lack of defining features makes it an excellent place to practice your compass work, or alternatively, an excellent place to accidentally walk in a very large, very polite circle.
