About Border End

Rising above the head of Eskdale, this rocky shoulder of Hard Knott offers one of the finest perspectives on the Roman Fort below. Often bypassed for its higher neighbour, this Birkett summit provides a rugged, quiet vantage point looking straight up the Great Cove towards the Scafell massif.

Did You Know?

  • The name refers to its topographical position as the 'end' of the high ground, marking the edge of the Hard Knott plateau before the terrain drops precipitously into the depths of Eskdale.
  • Though technically a subsidiary top of Hard Knott, Bill Birkett included it in his 'Complete Lakeland Fells' because its position provides a far superior view of the surrounding valleys than the true summit.
  • The summit offers a perfect bird's-eye view of the Mediobogdum Roman Fort; from this height, the layout of the granaries, headquarters, and commandant’s house is clearly discernible against the fellside.
  • Looking north, the view is dominated by the dramatic profile of Scafell Pike and the dark gap of Mickledore, while to the east, the road can be seen snaking up the brutal gradients of the Hardknott Pass.
  • It is a rare example of a hill where the 'End' is arguably more interesting than the middle, mostly because it is where the best views were left.
