About Bidein a' Choire Sheasgaich

Tucked deep into the Monar forest, this is one of Scotland’s most remote Munros. It presents a steep, sharp-peaked profile that stands in contrast to the broader ridges nearby. Reaching it requires a significant expedition from Attadale or Strathfarrar, offering a genuine sense of isolation and wild, North West Highland grandeur.

Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic for 'peak of the corrie of the barren cattle', referring to the 'seasg'—heifers or cattle not giving milk that were traditionally sent to these high, remote summer grazings.
  • Among the hillwalking community, the mountain is affectionately known as 'Cheesecake', a phonetic approximation of its Gaelic name that is considerably easier to pronounce during a long day on the hills.
  • Due to its extreme isolation, many walkers choose to break the journey by staying at the remote Maol-bhuidhe bothy to the south, one of the loneliest shelters in the Highlands.
  • The summit offers a spectacular, uncrowded perspective of the Torridon giants to the north, specifically the notched profile of Liathach and the white quartzite screes of Beinn Eighe across the Coulin Forest.
  • By the time you actually reach the foot of the 'Cheesecake', you have typically walked far enough to have completed two lesser Munros elsewhere, and the real climbing hasn't even begun.
