About Beinn Udlaidh

Sitting above the curves of Glen Orchy, this broad-backed Corbett is defined by its dramatic northern corries. While the ascent from the south is a steady grassy climb, the summit plateau reveals sharp drops into Coire Dheirg, offering clear, expansive views across to the elegant peak of Beinn Dorain.

Did You Know?

  • Derived from the Gaelic Beinn Udlaidh, the name is generally understood to mean 'The Secluded Mountain,' aptly describing its position set back from the busier roadside peaks near Tyndrum.
  • It is most frequently climbed as part of a horseshoe with its neighbour, Beinn Bhreac-liath, a pairing that requires crossing a notoriously sponge-like col between the two summits.
  • The mountain's northern face is famous among winter climbers for Coire Dheirg and its prominent quartzite dyke; the corrie holds ice well, offering some of the best-regarded steep water-ice routes in the southern Highlands.
  • The summit offers a commanding perspective of the Orchy hills, specifically looking south to the huge, craggy bulk of Ben Lui and west down the length of Glen Orchy toward the distant peaks of Mull.
  • While the northern corries are impressively steep, the southern approach is a masterclass in the 'unrelenting grassy slope,' a terrain that manages to be simultaneously simple to navigate and very hard on the calves.
