Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic 'Beinn Sgulaird', often translated as the 'Mountain of the Basket-maker', though it is also interpreted as 'Mountain of the Hat' due to the distinctive silhouette of the summit ridge when seen from the sea.
  • This top is a key landmark on the classic ascent from Druimavuic, marking the point where the broad lower slopes transition into a much narrower, more entertaining ridge of schist and quartz.
  • From this vantage point, the view south is dominated by the long, dark ribbon of Loch Etive, with the massive granite slabs of Ben Starav and the peaks of the Black Mount visible across the water.
  • While the South Top suggests the hard work is almost over, the undulating nature of the ridge ensures you will have plenty of time to appreciate several convincing false summits before reaching the true Munro peak.
