About Beinn Bhoidheach

Rising within the sprawling Forest of Atholl, this high, rounded Tump sits on the remote northern fringes of the Beinn a’ Ghlo massif. Its heather-clad slopes offer a quieter alternative to the neighbouring Munros, providing a genuine sense of isolation and a vantage point over the wild, uninhabited interior of the Atholl Estate.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic 'Beinn Bhòidheach,' which translates simply as 'Beautiful Hill.' While many Highland peaks are named for their ruggedness or colour, this is a rare direct tribute to the hill's aesthetic appeal, likely referring to its graceful profile when seen from the depths of Glen Tilt.
  • Though classified as a Tump, this summit functions as a significant northern outlier of the Beinn a’ Ghlo range. It overlooks the remote upper reaches of the Allt nan Learg and stands as a sentinel over the vast, roadless tract of land between Blair Atholl and the Dee valley.
  • The summit offers a unique, close-up perspective of the massive eastern corries of Carn nan Gabhar, the highest point of Beinn a’ Ghlo. To the north, the view extends across the deep trench of Glen Tilt towards the high, often snow-capped plateaus of the Cairngorms.
  • Reaching the base of this hill requires a significant trek through Glen Tilt from Blair Atholl. Most walkers use a mountain bike to reach Forest Lodge before beginning the ascent, as the long approach keeps this particular summit remarkably quiet compared to the more famous peaks nearby.
  • Naming a hill 'beautiful' in a land of dramatic peaks is a confident move, though given its extreme distance from the nearest road, you will have plenty of miles to decide if the original Gaelic speakers were being sincere or just optimistic.
