Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic 'Beinn Bheula', which translates as 'Mountain of the Mouth', likely referring to its commanding position over the deep glacial troughs of the surrounding sea lochs.
  • The summit is marked by a rocky outcrop known as Caisteal Dubh (Black Castle), a name that reflects the dark, craggy nature of the mica-schist that forms the mountain's highest point.
  • From the top, walkers earn a spectacular view of the Arrochar Alps, specifically the unmistakable jagged profile of The Cobbler and the long, silver ribbon of Loch Eck stretching to the west.
  • While often overshadowed by the Munros further north, its status as a Corbett ensures it remains a quieter alternative, though its complex terrain and steep flanks require careful navigation in low cloud.
  • The 'Black Castle' summit offers all the defensive benefits of a fortress with none of the amenities; the only things regularly garrisoned there are clouds and the occasional hardy raven.
