About Beinn Bhan South Top

Situated on the vast Torridonian sandstone plateau of the Applecross peninsula, this high point offers a quieter perspective on one of the North West Highlands' most celebrated massifs. While the main summit draws the crowds, this southern outlier provides a dramatic vantage point overlooking Loch Kishorn and the Skye Cuillin.

Did You Know?

  • The name Beinn Bhàn translates from Gaelic as 'White Mountain', thought to refer to the pale appearance of the terraced sandstone cliffs when illuminated by the sun or covered in light frost.
  • From this summit, there is a clear and direct view across the Inner Sound to the Crowlin Islands and the jagged Black Cuillin ridge on the Isle of Skye.
  • The hill is composed of Applecross Formation sandstone, featuring distinctive horizontal tiers of rock that are approximately 800 million years old.
  • The ascent is most commonly made from the top of the Bealach na Bà, the historic cattle-drovers' pass that is famously one of the steepest roads in Britain.
  • While it qualifies as a Tump, most walkers treat this summit as a scenic breathing space before tackling the much larger 'Great Corries' that define the main Beinn Bhàn ridge to the north.
