About Beinn Achaladair South Top

Situated on the airy southern shoulder of its parent Munro, this high point offers a superb vantage over the vast expanse of Rannoch Moor. The terrain is typical of the Bridge of Orchy hills, featuring steep grassy slopes that give way to a dramatic, craggy eastern escarpment overlooking the depths of Coire Achaladair.

Did You Know?

  • The name Beinn Achaladair comes from the Scottish Gaelic 'Beinn Achadh an Laduir', meaning 'Mountain of the field of the torrent'. This refers to the flat, well-watered ground at the foot of the mountain where the Water of Tulla flows toward Loch Tulla.
  • This summit sits on a narrowing ridge between the main peak of Beinn Achaladair and the high col leading toward Beinn an Dothaidh, making it a natural waypoint for walkers completing the classic Bridge of Orchy horseshoe.
  • The view south from this top is dominated by the massive, dark northern corries of Beinn an Dothaidh, while looking east across the glen reveals the remote summits of the Mamlorn Forest, including Beinn Heasgarnich and Meall Ghaordaidh.
  • Though it stands well above the 3,000-foot mark at 1,003 metres, it is classified as a Munro Top rather than a full Munro due to its proximity and limited drop between it and the main summit just to the north.
  • Despite being the 'South Top', this point arguably provides a more dramatic sense of the mountain's scale than the main summit, as the cliffs of the eastern face are particularly sheer at this section of the ridge.
