About Ballencleuch Law

Standing as the third highest point in the Lowther Hills, this broad, grassy dome offers a classic Southern Upland experience. Often paired with neighbouring Scaw’d Law, the summit provides a sense of vast isolation, overlooking the deep waters of the Daer Reservoir and the steep-sided valley of the Potrail Water.

Did You Know?

  • The name is a linguistical hybrid; 'cleuch' is a Scots term for a steep-sided ravine, while 'Law' denotes a prominent hill. It likely refers to the deep-cut burn of the Ballencleuch Cleuch on its southern flank.
  • The hill serves as a pivotal point on the high-level circuit around the Daer Reservoir, which at the time of its completion in the 1950s was the largest earth-fill dam in the British Isles.
  • From the summit, the industrial masts atop Lowther Hill are clearly visible to the northwest, providing a sharp mechanical contrast to the wild, empty moorland that characterises the rest of the view.
  • Despite being classified as a Graham, a Donald, and a Marilyn, the hill remains resolutely unassuming, proving that having three titles doesn't necessarily mean you have a more interesting personality than your neighbours.
