Did You Know?

  • This fell gains its recognition mainly because of Alfred Wainwright's definitive guide, *The Outlying Fells of Lakeland*. However, even the great man didn't give it a formal name, referring to it only by its height as he mapped the circular Bannisdale Horseshoe walk in the final chapter.
  • If you consult older Ordnance Survey maps or Wainwright, don't expect to see 'Ancrow Brow North' explicitly marked on the landscape. This name is primarily a modern identifier used by peak baggers, particularly those referencing the Database of British and Irish Hills (DoBIH), to distinguish this specific 540.1m high point.
  • Standing at 540.1 metres (1772 feet), this is a modest summit, firmly placing it among the Far Eastern Fells near Kendal, rather than the towering central giants. Its position makes it an excellent choice for a secluded day out, offering quieter views over the surrounding valleys than those found further west.
  • When walkers tackle the Bannisdale Horseshoe clockwise, Ancrow Brow North follows the slightly higher Swinklebank Crag. It represents the second of the two highest, most anonymous bumps along the main ridgeline before the route begins its general traverse towards Long Crag.
  • The Bannisdale area is known for its wild, unfrequented character, making it a peaceful antidote to the crowds found elsewhere in the National Park. From Ancrow Brow North, you look down into the secluded valley of Bannisdale Beck, appreciating the raw, unpolished nature of this corner of the Lakes.
