About An Sgulan
Located north of Newtonmore, this high, rounded Tump sits within the sprawling Monadhliath plateau. It is often overlooked in favour of the nearby Munros, yet the walk offers a true sense of Highland isolation. From the top, you can see the distinctive cleft of the Lairig Ghru cutting through the Cairngorm giants.

Did You Know?
- •The name is derived from the Gaelic 'An Sgulan', meaning 'the basket' or 'the little wicker basket', likely a reference to the hill's rounded, bowl-like profile when viewed from the lower glens.
- •Most walkers visit this summit as a short detour while traversing the high ridge between the two Munros of A’ Chailleach and Geal Charn.
- •From the summit, there is a clear view of the winding upper reaches of the River Dulnain, which drains this remote interior of the Monadhliath toward the Spey Valley.
- •The Monadhliath is famous for its extensive peat hags, and An Sgulan provides a masterclass in why local hillwalkers rarely leave their gaiters at home, even in the height of summer.
