About An Leacainn

Its heathery slopes and craggy outcrops lead to a summit with expansive views across the Ardnamurchan peninsula and over the water toward the distant, mountainous skyline of Mull.

Did You Know?

  • The name An Leacainn is Scottish Gaelic for 'the broad hillside' or 'the slope,' a descriptive term for a hill featuring a prominent, flanking face.
  • From the summit, the view south-west is dominated by the winding length of Loch Sunart, with the distinctive volcanic profile of Ben Hiant visible on the Ardnamurchan peninsula.
  • Though relatively low at 414 metres, the terrain is characteristically tough, featuring the dense heather, hidden bogs, and rocky knolls typical of the Sunart and Moidart regions.
  • As a 'Hump'—a hill with a prominence of at least 100 metres—this peak stands as a significant local high point, separated from the higher mountains of the Ardgour interior by the deep glens nearby.
  • Navigating the lower slopes requires a keen eye for deer tracks; otherwise, you may find yourself performing an involuntary Highland dance through the deep, hidden peat hags.
