Did You Know?

  • The summit is home to an impressive Iron Age hillfort, which likely served as a strategic lookout over the valley. Archaeologists suggest it was a significant stronghold for the local Silures tribe before the Romans decided to renovate the area.
  • A section of the Roman road, Sarn Helen, skirts the western flank of the hill. It originally connected the forts at Brecon Gaer and Abergavenny, proving that ancient commuters had much better scenery than we do on the modern A40.
  • From the top, you get a 'two-for-one' landscape deal, overlooking both the winding River Usk and Llangorse Lake. It's the perfect spot to pretend you're an Iron Age chieftain surveying your kingdom, or at least your parked car in the distance.
  • The hill is largely composed of Old Red Sandstone, which gives the surrounding soil its distinctive, healthy-looking hue. It provides remarkably sturdy footing compared to the soul-destroying peat bogs found in the more rugged parts of the Welsh uplands.
  • The name translates roughly to 'wooded slope of the ridge,' though local hikers often call it 'the hill of false hopes.' Despite its modest height, the final push always feels slightly longer when you can already smell the chips from the pub in Talybont.
