About Airgiod Bheinn

Guarding the eastern edge of the Beinn a' Ghlò massif, this sharp quartzite ridge offers a more rugged character than its neighbouring summits. The ascent from the Bealach an Fhiodha reveals dramatic drops into Glen Loch, with clear views stretching across the Mounth toward Lochnagar and the distant Cairngorm giants.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic Airgiod Bheinn, meaning 'Silver Mountain'. This refers to the pale, sparkling quartzite rocks and scree slopes that define the upper reaches of the massif, catching the light particularly well after a Highland downpour.
  • It is one of the three principal summits that form the great bulk of Beinn a’ Ghlò. Although it misses Munro status by only a handful of metres in prominence, it is often considered the most visually striking peak of the group due to its steep, well-defined southern prow.
  • From the cairn, the view east is dominated by the vast, empty expanse of the Forest of Atholl and the remote Glen Loch, with the distinctive profile of Mount Keen visible on the far horizon on a clear day.
  • Despite its height and ruggedness, Airgiod Bheinn is rarely climbed as a standalone objective; it is nearly always bagged as the final flourish of a long, classic traverse of the Beinn a' Ghlò ridge starting from Loch Moraig.
  • While 'Silver Mountain' suggests hidden riches, the only thing you are likely to find in abundance here is the notorious 'Beinn a' Ghlò mist', which has a habit of appearing exactly when you reach the most interesting part of the ridge.
